Your Complete Moving Timeline
Moving is one of the most stressful life events — but it doesn't have to be chaotic. This week-by-week checklist keeps you on track from the moment you know you're moving to the day you're settled in your new home.
8 Weeks Before Moving
Research moving companies and get at least 3 in-home estimates. Create a moving budget (movers, supplies, deposits, travel). Start decluttering room by room — donate, sell, or discard anything you haven't used in a year. Begin collecting boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and markers. If you have kids, research new schools and start transfer paperwork.
4 Weeks Before Moving
Confirm your moving company or reserve your rental truck. File a change of address with USPS (takes 7-10 days to activate). Notify your employer, bank, credit cards, insurance providers, subscriptions, and doctors of your new address. Start packing non-essential rooms: guest rooms, storage areas, seasonal items. Take photos of electronics wiring before disconnecting.
2 Weeks Before Moving
Call utility companies to schedule disconnection at your old home and connection at your new home (electric, gas, water, internet, trash). Transfer or cancel gym memberships, library cards, and local services. Pack most rooms, labeling every box by room and contents. Arrange pet and child care for moving day. Confirm parking permits if moving in a city.
1 Week Before Moving
Confirm all moving-day details: time, address, contact info. Pack your essentials box (see FAQ below). Defrost your freezer if moving your refrigerator. Use up perishable food. Disassemble furniture that won't fit through doorways. Back up your computer. Charge all devices. Withdraw cash for tips (typically $20-$50 per mover for a full-day move).
Moving Day
Do a final walkthrough of every room, closet, cabinet, and drawer. Check the attic, basement, garage, and yard. Meet the movers, walk through the inventory, and point out fragile items. Supervise loading but stay out of the way. Take meter readings at your old home. Lock all doors and windows. Hand over keys to the new owner or landlord.
First Week After Moving
Unpack essentials first: kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms. Check that all utilities are working. Update your driver's license and vehicle registration (required within 30 days in most states). Register to vote at your new address. Locate the nearest hospital, pharmacy, and grocery store. Meet your neighbors. Schedule any immediate repairs before settling in.

Packing Tips That Save Time and Breakage
- Pack heavy items (books, tools) in small boxes; light items (linens, pillows) in large boxes
- Wrap dishes vertically like records — they're stronger on edge than flat
- Use clothing and towels as free packing material for fragile items
- Label boxes on the top AND side so you can read them when stacked
- Color-code boxes by room with colored tape or markers
- Pack a clear plastic bin as your "open first" box so you can see what's inside
